The Small Habit That Protects a Marriage
Not the Big Things
People assume long marriages are held together by big romantic gestures. In our almost forty years, I have found it is usually the opposite. It is the small, daily habits that quietly protect a marriage.
Turn Toward, Not Away
The habit I would point to first is simple: choose to turn toward each other in the little moments. When Ken speaks, I try to actually stop and listen instead of half-hearing him. When I am tempted to withdraw after a hard day, I lean in instead.
Why Small Wins
A marriage is not decided in one big conversation. It is decided in a thousand tiny ones, in whether we keep choosing each other in the ordinary hours. Those small turns add up to trust.
A Gentle Challenge
This week, catch the little moments. Put the phone down when your spouse walks in. Ask one real question. Small habits, repeated, build a love that lasts.
