When Anxiety Hits: Three Steps I Take in the Moment
Anxiety Doesn’t Ask Permission
For most of my life, anxiety showed up uninvited and at the worst times. What changed was not that it disappeared, but that I learned what to do the moment it arrived. Here are three simple steps I still use.
1. Name It, Don’t Fight It
The instinct is to panic about the panic. Instead, I quietly name what is happening: this is fear, and it is not the truth about me. Naming it takes away some of its power and reminds me I am not my feelings.
2. Breathe and Anchor to a Verse
I slow my breathing and bring one short truth to mind. Often it is 2 Timothy 1:7, that God gave me power, love, and a sound mind. A single verse, repeated slowly, is like a handrail on a dark staircase.
3. Take One Small Next Step
Anxiety wants me frozen. So I choose one small, doable thing: a glass of water, a short walk, a text to a friend. Movement, however small, breaks the spell.
Grace for the Process
None of this is a magic switch, and some days are harder than others. Be patient with yourself. Freedom is built one steadied moment at a time.
